Optical smoke alarms sense smoke using the light scatter principle. They have a quick response to visible smoldering smoke (e.g. from foam filled furniture & overheated PVC wiring) and they are suitable for general residential use. Please note that Fire authorities recommend that both optical and ionisation alarms are fitted for the fastest possible response to different types of fire.
